  • Reading Workshop: Nonfiction Reading (Expository Texts)
  • Writing: Opinion Essay
  • Math: Division with Unit Fractions
  • Science: The Scientific Method (getting ready for science fair projects!)

Tests & Projects Due:

  • Friendship Party Box- Due Wednesday
  • Readers Notebook- Due Thursday
  • Math Test- Friday
  • Math Packet- Due Friday

Other Super-Important Information:

  • Middle School Math Placement Test-On Monday, you can expect a district form (it’s blue) where parents can choose to have their child test to determine if going to Math 7 (and skipping Math 6) would be appropriate in middle school.  This is an OPT-IN form.  If you don’t sign the form, that’s fine, but your child would not take the Middle School Math Placement Test.  I encourage strong math students to test.  Not sure?  Email me and ask my opinion if you’d like.
  • Friendship Party (February 14th)- Thanks for signing up to donate or volunteer!  Please send in food no later than Wednesday.  For fruit/veggie people, please wash and cut things (not clementines) in preparation for serving.
  • Science Fair- Applications for science fair will come home on Thursday.  Along with those, I will send home my information which includes due dates, a quick guide to the experimental method, and a rubric which I will use to grade students.
  • Fitzgerald Marine Reserve Field Trip- On April 23rd, we have a trip to the tide pools.  I am looking for 5-6 parent chaperones.  I have 3+ so far.  Please let me know if you’re interested.  This trip requires 6 chaperones for our class of 28 students.

My name is Shawn Murphy.  This is my 20th year of teaching, and my 11th at Ponderosa.  I have taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, with the majority of my teaching experience as a 5th grade teacher.  I believe in a structured, yet friendly and warm classroom environment that allows all students to grow and be their very best.  One of my greatest goals is to motivate each and every child to push themselves to be better students and people.  When students want to learn, and are willing to put forth the effort to excel, real learning and growth takes place.  I welcome any input you might have on how I can best achieve this with your child.  I feel very fortunate to be teaching at Ponderosa with such wonderful students and families.  If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me at smurphy@scusd.net or call at 408-423-4062.
